Mom 2011.jpg

Christine's Blankets was born out of tragedy.

On October 16th 2019 my 67 year old mother was murdered. The man who murdered her said he thought she had his blanket. My mom was mentally ill and unmedicated. The family of the man who murdered her made a public post saying that he too is mentally ill and unmedicated. Both were homeless. Although our family had tried countless times to get her the medical attention she desperately needed, our hands were tied due to patient rights and the fact that she was an adult. The other family posted the same frustrations. Not being able to deem them incompetent, (although severely mentally ill), has caused both of them their lives and their families life long sorrow. Our system is in desperate need of an overhaul. These 2 people are only a tiny portion of the amount of individuals who are homeless, many mentally ill and unmedicated. Their families are beside themselves in frustration, mental anguish, heartbroken and feeling helpless. (Not to mention the flack they get from the general public not understanding the system and then blaming the family for their homelessness!)

While we may not be able to immediately change the laws in order to protect, (not harm the severely mentally ill, as it is doing in its current state), we can do something to give some comfort. Christine's Blankets are meant to provide just that. *They are lightweight and easy to carry. When rolled up they can be used as a comforting pillow. They also come with a comforting, encouraging message. We want them to know they are loved, even if at a distance.

We are always accepting gently used blankets that we will tag with an encouraging card. Other essentials such as socks, deodorant, toothpaste, etc. are also much appreciated and will be distributed along with the blankets.
